Thats the problem I see with them, converter failure.
If it's caught early, a converter, fluid and filter and go.
If left , that's a complete overhaul.
If you have weird stuff starting, pull the pan. Any aluminum or brass, the converter is going.

Pretty sure if you think something even sounded different, it's weird. Our history has shown 1 ton GM vans lunch tranny's between 115k and 135k miles. Regardless of preventative service. So I tried not babying this 2020, and run hard acceleration often. Just passed 160k today. That is behind a 6.0liter. co-worker babies his, new tranny at 115k. No idea which transmission is in these. But have been seeing the same in all. Even less in kuv models.

Had a 2004 E350 reading body(kuv). Went 289k before 5.4 intake manifold failed. The 6.0 has more HP/tq than the 5.4 ferd. Not sure why the GM tranny's fail. I bet Ed knows. @redline4

Most noticeable would be a "driving over railroad tracks" type shudder feeling. Sometimes it can shudder enough to also hear.
Steady speed and throttle and a noticeable rpm fluctuation when it shouldn't.
Sometimes there will also be a whine noise, and not the sometimes heard planetary gearset whine.
Those are usually torque converter.

For some reason torque converter failure let go then usually goes to the 3-5-R clutch and you'll get a delay to reverse, and a flare into 3rd and 5th.
Sometimes issues in the pump housing cause 3-5-R issues too.

It should be replaced depending on how it's marked. Opens at a lower temp.

I got into an argument with the instructor when I went to the 6 speed class. He said they new trans run cooler than ever. I told him bullshìt.

Most of the new stuff has a thermal bypass valve so the fluid doesn't even flow through the cooler until stupid temps like 175 degrees..

unless im plowing hard i have a hard time getting my 04 4l80 above 120 degrees. the 2016 6l90 seems to like 140 or so. assuming correct instruments haha

Weird happenings today. Fughin bull was acting crazy and pushing the bale around on the back of the tractor. I tried driving around the field, but he wasn't giving up. Chased the tractor around for awhile. I was a bit nervous about getting off the tractor to cut the strings on the bale so I could unroll it, so I climbed back over the seat to stand on the unroller. Slipped and fell through the damn thing and skinned my shin from ankle to knee.

Looks a hell of a lot better than Mark's leg though....so I'm not gonna whine too much.

What's a 2017 silverado 2500 have in it for a trans? And whats normal temp?

I had one briefly a few years ago, on flat ground tranny temp was always around 175-185 running 80-85 mph, with a bed full of tools, beating on it running the steep passes on I-70 it would hit 225 pretty often. I don't think I ever saw the trans temp on that truck below 165 (unless cold) even being easy on it, in the few months I had it.

Service advisor hands me the inspection report, I look it over and said “Let’s take a walk.” Report said needs air filter and cabin filter, I opened hood showed him a pure white filter… He made up some excuse about mileage yadayada. Walked him around to the back of the truck, showed him the missing rear wiper,, showed him the part where it was marked in good working condition. He had no words left at that point, “Can I have the service manager call you tomorrow?”

Someone had a very bad end of day…

That's shìtty. But all too common.
Our lubies are required to show the filter to the service writer because of similar situations.
I've had some words with them over other things they sold that were not needed. And refused to do the work too. I'd rather eat the 20ish minutes of putting the vehicle on my hoist and verifying their "supposed" problem then just blindly doing it. The others just do it because "the job was already approved "..

I was always told that anything over 200* shortens the life of an auto trans significantly.

Yeah it was a gas truck. It was the 1st vehicle I'd ever owned with a tranny temp display, so I always left it on, just to watch it for fun, then I'd rail on it to see what the tranny temp would do. I didn't buy that truck to keep for long.

I know the owners quite well, have worked on 5 houses for family and we just finished redoing the lighting in the shop. I’m sure if there wasn’t such a shortage of workers he’d be out of a job.
SA didn’t dare remind me to give him a 5 on Fords satisfaction survey this time. People wonder why dealerships get such a bad reputation. I prefer the small local shop but had a warranty repair so it was just easier to combine the visit.
