I think it's more a sign of foolishness...if you have to purchase chicken feed, it ends up being about the same as going to the store to buy eggs. They are handy to have around in the spring/summer/fall...not so much in the winter.

I've got 6. They don't lay all winter and I don't play light games to make them.

Definitely not a money saver but the fresh eggs are delicious.
