I do the dot physical and card, but not the log book. And yes, most small businesses are out of compliance. I am not for more regulations, but would like higher fines for incidents. Seems there is a shortage of over the road tractor trailer drivers, because i see many that are awful. Blocking the left lane for miles and not caring. Getting passed on the right. I hope it is a local problem and not a national one.
They are awful because they aren't paid enough. Most OTR drivers work 70 hours a week and gross $50-60k a year. Scrutinized by DOT, doctors, employers, insurance companies, laywers, etc. There is zero job security. One wrong mistake and it can end your career, cost you thousands of dollars with all of these recent nuclear settlements, or worse yet injure or kill someone. Most of the people willing to put up with all the BS are slack jawn bottom feeders and most of the trucking companies employing them are just as bad or worse.
Log books wouldn't be necessary if drivers were subject to the fair labor standards act and paid hourly with OT after 40. If truck drivers were paid a decent wage for the hours they worked and compensated for the time away from home, you'd have a lot more qualified people willing to do it.
That'll be @JoeDirt . He's a dik.
Yessir. And yes I am.
