Morning / Evening all. Got to sleep in today as this is the day we celebrate the greatest country in the world.

Happy Canada Day!!!

Our celebrations will be measured and somewhat somber this year as we have been reminded that we haven’t always been the kindest to our first residents. Thousands of young aboriginal kids were taken from their families and installed in residential schools to teach them that their heritage and culture was bad. In many cases teachers and school leaders beat and abused these kids and many never returned to their families, their lives, dreams and culture buried in an unmarked grave. As we try to reconcile our past there have been more than 1000 unmarked graves discovered in the last month. As we celebrate this great land we must admit our warts and try to heal instead of covering up.

I heard a story yesterday that teared me up instantly. A house fire. Down syndrome kid to afraid to get out no matter how much mom tried. He was old enough to be stronger than her. They figure she couldn't drag him out. She stayed with him and they burnt up together. The others got out. Gave me the sads.

I hate hearing stories like that. A few of my customers at work specialize in insurance restoration jobs. I’ve heard some horrific stories, some people you want to do more for because of what they’ve been through, others think we owe them the world because it happened… Humans suck!!!

We may feel that our ancestors did unspeakable wrongs, and yes...wrongs were committed. But we didn't do any of these things, and have no reason to beat ourselves up over things that we didn't do.

What we can do is live our lives in such a way that we feel good about ourselves. We can reach out to others who need a hand. Most importantly, we can live in today. Not dwelling on the mistakes of our past, or concerning ourselves about what tomorrow may have in store for us.

Thanks Randy. That is the goal, but part of living our best lives has to be remembering all and trying to up lift when we can. Our society is still riddled with the fall out of the past atrocities and we need to do more. My intention is not to be all political but I can’t be hypocritical either. I can’t proclaim Canada the greatest country in the world without acknowledging some of the worst things we’ve done.

If we want to talk religion, we can talk about the role of the church in residential schools and the refusal of many to make any amends.
