Why have parts been discontinued to this great saw?
It was the emission requirements that killed the 2xx series, later the 3xx series, and in 10 years the same will happen with the 5xx series saws.
Husqvarna has probably also changed how long they will produce spare parts for a discontinued models, before it was 10 years but I heard that they have gone down to 7 years.

Hopefully the aftermarket will keep them alive and get better with quality. What are your thoughts about a dukes piston and cylinder for this saw as AM may be my only option?

The biggest difference between them is that the HDA-199 has an acceleration pump.
Whether it matters in terms of performance is another matter, but in terms of conversion, I would have taken an HDA-198 any day.
Be aware that you have to massage the impulse channel a little thought since the 254/257/261/262 HDA is a tiny fraction to the side compared to the 357/359 carburetor.
Credit for that information is Dr. Al.

The 199 is a train wreck waiting to happen with that accelerator pump thing that is unnecessary in my opinion.
Definitely go with the 198. :)
