Once you know what the correct height looks like in relation to the file, you dont need the guide anymore. After awhile it becomes second nature.

After your done with the guide send it back to Dallas. Had to add that last detail lol.

The roller guide holds the file at the right height. That is where most people screw up starting out. They either get too far into the gullet, and make the top plate too thin, or too far up, and then don't have enough hook.

I’m pretty decent at round. But I think one of these would help be get the hang of square better. I’m honestly quite terrible at square filing smh

I had my neighbors buy them I got tired of sharpening chains
They do a good job with those.

I bought one of those. Once you learn to hand file, its so much quicker. I'll even straighten out a rocked one or one somebody screwed up by hand now. Faster and better cutting than putting it on the grinder. Dont get enough of the hook that I want with the grinder. Its still nice for depth gauges though.

That's exactly what I did WITH that clamp deal. Forgot to adjust the height for the different saw and made the top plate to thin and made a big hook. Took half the cutter length filed away to fix my mistake plus my toe up finner from hurrying and irritation. It was a near new chain I thought id touch up.

I figured out I can use the top of my clenched index finger on the file hand(left in my case) to judge angle. Works pretty good.

I'm kinda overly concerned about the file angle I think too. As in the 35 degree deal....

when i was sick and recovering i spent alot of time filing learning using the stihl /pferd 2n1 it holds the right height and guides are marked for angle but it also gives you muscle memory
