Oh I wouldn't have guessed their use but I immediately figured this was one of your engineer pals' ideas. Doesn't surprise me one bit Tim. I firmly believe good engineering requires two strong skill sets- you've got to be good at math and even better at problem solving. Lots of people become engineers because they are good at math, meanwhile they totally suck at problem solving. Case in point with these foam balls. If you're good at math and bad at solving problems, become an accountant and save everyone a lot of grief.

Don't forget acknowledging experience. It nearly always trumps education. The folks on the ground know their work intimately, much better than a calculator and keyboard puncher.
