I took one of those down for a buddy then dragged it home for firewood. Can’t say I’d do it again..

Around here can't be too picky, I don't go out of my way to get it, but have burned it in the past. It beats hypothermia.

Elm, maple, or hackberry are my favorites. Tree guy I know dropped a trailer load of cottonwood here, beggars can't be choosers,

I'll save the better stuff for later in the winter.

You would probably love a couple dump trailer loads of oak, huh?

not asking how you know what unwashed ass smells like

I've gone a week without showering. Nasty I know, but it happens.

Like when my water line from the well to the house froze and split, when we had a record cold snap.

Or when I go up in the mountains camping, for a week, I blend in with nature.

Never had any oak to burn. Not sure if there is any around here. Least not that I've seen. I got some locust once and a bit of hickory from the tree guy, and even a few smallish ash trees.

Elm is about 80% of what I burn. There's a ton of Elm around here. I know there's a few different flavors of Elm also. I'm not sure how to ID which is which. But I know which Elm throw more heat.

We used to spend 10 days at a Sundance living in a tent. Sundancers are not allowed to touch water. Firekeepers are discouraged from "smelling freshly showered" too. The idea is that the spirits want to smell you...not your deodorant.

I remember once during the third or fourth day of the dance, a storm rolled through and it rained hard for a few hours. Us firekeepers built the fire up huge. When the round ended, the dancers all gathered around the fire to warm up. A young woman was helping us with the fire....and was also near the fire trying to get dry. After a few minutes she walked away....and joined those of us who were just staying out of the way. I asked why she left the fire? She said it smelled like a wet dog over there....

We burn elm here too. It’s usually a good burner. Oak we can load in the stove and it lasts for hours throwing off good heat.

Congrats glad it's working for you. My post was meant as humor. Maybe you were able to notice that.

Present day statistics say 50% of marriages end in divorce. The percentage was higher a 10-15 years ago, but over the last decade less people are getting married, so the percentages have lowered.

I know a lot more people, that have divorced, than have stayed married.
I knew what you were saying.

The Elm around here will throw heat all night, get up in the morning there's still chunks in the stove putting off heat, stir it around, throw more in, it takes right back off. I almost never have to restart fires from scratch. I don't have a fancy stove either, just a old 70's earth stove, but it's pretty big (24x22x24 inside) so it takes a nice load, I fill it before bed.

I like siberian and chinese elm (they might be the same?) around here it grows straighter, not as many forks / branches until at the top, and the bark slides right off as you're cutting it. It only gets to about 18-22" My BIL calls it slippery bark Elm, since the bark slides off so easy.

The american elm around here, forks out a ton, it gets a lot bigger, I've seen some as big as 48-50" at the trunk. It holds it's bark forever. I've had some split & stacked two plus years later still holding it's bark on. I've noticed the american doesn't thrown heat like the other two flavors of Elm.

Last thought, the american seems to be more in peoples yards or near houses. Siberian and chinese are in wind rows or fence rows, exposed to the winds of the high plains. When I only split with a maul, some of the smaller flavors of Elm were like hitting rocks. I've had some siberian stall my 28-ton hydro splitter it's so hard and desne.

Good morning men. Restful day with some hunting later. No motivation to get up early and head out to the back. Trail camera says 3-6pm is the best time slot for harvest. So we will go with that. Have a happy Sunday.
