So the Prodigy just spent the day putting timing chains in an Equinox.
And guess what, the didn't fix the lack of compression due to bent valves he failed to notice..

It's not difficult. With the cam cover off, do the followers/rocker arms contact the valve tip and cam lobe with no lash? Yes= valves OK. No= valves not happy.
Aren't most overhead cam engines all interference now? If the timing chain or belt need replacing, something usually happened to make it need changing.Timing chain seems like the logical fix there
