I thought Cloyes was one of The Names in timing gear stuff. Even I've heard of them for instance.
They, like any supplier makes them to the manufacturers spec. Well they are supposed to anyway. Having worked at an automotive supplier I know how stringent some auto manufacturers can be on tolerances ect. But in the end there can be engineering problems from the manufacturer, quality issues from the supplier or a combination of both. The place I worked....84% of all vehicles in north America and Canada had one or more of their parts in them, plus other countries. We made parts for most popular brands, domestic and foreign. What amazed me was the wide range of give a fukkness these manufacturers demonstrated with regards to parts quality.

Wow that definitely looks cheap and nasty

That guide only gets replaced due to the cam timing chain becoming loose and rubbing on it, therefore wearing a groove in the side of it.
I have no idea who manufactured the chain. Likely some farmer in a mud hut with only rocks and sticks as tools.
Actually, he could probably make a better quality product, so strike that.
