Regarding the new “mini” kit per the site
  • No trimming on MS661
  • Minimal shroud peg removal on MS500i
With the original kit you did have to dremel out the shroud as you stated.

Interesting there is a kit coming out for the 462, 362/400.

So is my understanding of how max flow systems operate on a 500i obsolete and old news or do I pretty much have it figured out ? I don’t wanna give anyone bad information.

I think you are correct in regards to the original kit and having to trim the shroud. I believe the issue is the soft suspension the 500i has with long bars and it allows the cover and shroud to contact when the suspension flexes. I think stiffer suspension helps remedy this but not for certain.

I'm a big fan of the WCS suspension kits, I've even mixed and matched the pieces in the kits to fit in other saws, but we can discuss that elsewhere, you can get the girls pretty sore with off topic conversation.

The maxflows I had for 440/60's never changed. They weren't ever obsolete or "old news". They haven't changed since their inception. If they have I hope someone fills me in.

This new under the stock cover is obviously different...but if the current 500 kit with the cover included is now plug and play it's clearly different than it was when it came out.

Or maybe I got a factory lemon...
sawmikaze, you’re right. The Semi‑Pro Series kits — including the new “Mini” — were designed from a clean sheet for users who prefer the stock look of the 500i or 661. We could have simply squeezed a filter under the OEM cover, but that’s never been our approach. It took a lot of development work to balance CFM, foam density, oil‑holding capability, cleaning intervals, and overall function while still fitting under the stock cover. The MaxFlow Mini meets all of those goals.

The Pro‑Series kits for the 500i and 661 are aimed at a different type of user. They use a larger MAX cage and a much bigger filter element with significantly more surface area, higher airflow, more oil retention, and the longest cleaning interval available. To support that performance, we supply a form‑fitted cover designed specifically for the system.

The 500i MAX can be installed without trimming the shroud when running a short bar. However, the Stihl anti‑vibe mounts are very soft, and longer bars can flex enough to let the cover make slight contact with the engine shroud. To avoid that, we recommend trimming the baffle (which keeps the stock shroud untouched) or trimming the shroud itself, which is the preferred option for Pro users.

The 500i and 661 have been the go‑to saws for professional users for nearly a decade, and most have no trouble with the small trim adjustment.

For users who want a completely no‑mod installation, the Mini provides excellent performance — just not quite at the level of the Pro‑Series MAX.

I have an unrelated question for @Max-Flow Filters have/would you consider offering covers in both colors? On numerous occasions the opposite color was wanted for the filter cover. I'm reminded of this having yet another such a request currently happening, that makes the idea fresh on the sure would-be nice list.
I appreciate the question. We’ve heard that request before, and we do offer both orange and black covers for the 661 and orange covers for all of our Legacy saw models. The black Pro‑Series cover has really become part of our trademark look, and I’m reluctant to give up that visibility. Out in the field, people recognize it instantly — without that black cover, (as with the MINI) there’s no clear visual cue that a saw is running a MaxFlow system. The Pro‑Series cover signals that the user is a professional who wants to run the best. Personally I love the Pro-Series black look, that is why we introduced it.

That’s why we’re cautious about moving away from it, and why we created distinct product lines: Pro, Semi‑Pro, and Legacy. It’s not about skill level; it’s about how much time someone spends behind a saw. Anyone running more than ten tanks of fuel a week should seriously consider the Pro‑Series filters with the new MAX support cage. Even if it takes a bit of shroud trimming.

That said, I understand why some users prefer alternate colors, and I’ll take your suggestion under advisement. Feedback like this helps us decide where expanding options makes sense without diluting the identity we’ve built.

Thanks for the reply, I guess it's more black dye, orange paint and hydro-dip until then.
