My MS-250 is the loudest in my fleet, even more than my ported Echo 500. Only mod I did was open up the fishgill slots on the muffler a little bit so hot exhaust wasn't blowing on plastic.

Depending on how you direct the hot gasses the dB can change.

Side exhaust ports placed to the rear of the muffler can seem to be the best compromise of flow and noise.

The 400c muffler I recently did came out well. Exit port nears 100% of ex port area, yet the one baffle and rear exit allows the sound waves to collide and create some noise reduction.

Cases in point would be the new model Stihls. They began “twisting” the exhaust away from the muffler exit. The exits have become relatively larger than those of the past, but they still meet production guidelines.

Look at the MS462 exhaust port. There was not enough length on the can, so they started to twist the exhaust gasses right in the port itself and continued it with the baffle.

Cut the factory spot welds on a 261c can and opened the outlet. Plan is to drop a piece of metal though a slit in the top to eliminate any short circuiting of the exhaust gasses right out of the deflector.

I have no luck at all welding on the newer Stihl mufflers. I’ve tried as much as I know and still can’t do a decent job. 584AE0AB-5999-41A8-BEFB-0762A612B5DA.jpeg583A3217-6714-46AA-9D62-947F6E456328.jpeg

MS 201C with WCS muffler sounds like a Hodaka Combat Wombat. Showing my age:eek:
The top and small rear handles are the only ones I see where pipes might be needed. That's due to no room around the muffler to add a traditional port like we are used to.

I have a ported 2511 being built that comes with a pipe. When I asked about modding the factory muffler, was told it won't make as much power. I'd like to send it to Joe and see how much power is lost vs the noise. This saw will be used to clear blow downs/dead trees while in the kayak, I'm the only one that uses modded saws so far.

Can be, when you put your pipe in don't just drill the outside, with a regular length drill bit, get down into the guts of the baffle etc. inside and clear a path to the pipe. This will let it breathe or flow so to say much better. Was known later as the @dall manuever.

Chainsawing while in a kayak!
That some sketchy stuff, like cutting at night with no lights all while a bit tippsy.

Very sketchy, fun with a little saw though. I've used my ported 261 but much prefer something smaller. Our group clears a lot of the river that the state guys can't due to man power.
