I have the saw now and apparently it was one of the first saws when they were released.

I pulled the top cover off and found the top and back of the cylinder coated in unburnt 2 stroke oil.

Pulled the cylinder off and everything looks fine but the oil is only on the back around the intake boot and spread up and over the top?

It's wet around the intake

And on top. Spark plug and decomp are fine, no leaks

Front is dry

And I believe these guys make good cylinders?

i'll guess old stlye intake boot with washers inside. can we see a pic of boot and inside boot. thx

get 4701A coil + straight intake boot and then reset the saw. Cut with it for at least a tank if not two.

another indication is the cylinder will be marked 1144B went to 1144C. I could never get Stihl to tell me a difference if any.

saw is probably from 2013 - so it could stand to have a new plug, fuel filter, and check if it needs a carb kit. ...might as well cover a few basics before you go chasing your tale. But the boot and coil are a must.

I can't come up with any possible reason for the oil on the outside like that.
Oil usually attracts dirt and grime. Not the case here.
If I had to guess, the saw was in a Jobox or side bin with other saws that happened to leak bar oil on the 661. I see that every time Richards Tree Service pulls up with his bucket truck and opens the side bin where he keeps the saws hog piled on each other.

Change that intake boot & coil

decomp and plug were tight but its possible the decomp was pushed in and leaked.

Regardless, I will contact Stihl today and find out how much for an updated coil and boot.

My guess is $200 - $300 range

Will ring them now

Rang the local Stihl shop and they are clueless
Have no recollection of coils of intake boots being warranted or replaced.
Can only find 2 coils in their IPL's, a 1301 and 4720?
Also told me there is only 1 boot style listed.

So now I have no idea as I cant find an IPL to look at

I suspect dealers are much like the 661's - a mixed bag. Try contacting @bennne

or perhaps a Northern Hemisphere OPE member will help you?
