MS441C-M idle problem

Hey guys! First post here, but I made the move and followed some of you from the "other" site, and I'm happy that I did! Anyway, I've got an MS441 m-tronic that I purchased new in 2011, and it has been completely flawless up until just recently. The saw seems to surge and hunt at idle. It still starts easy, has good pickup when you hit the trigger, and it seems to cut and pull itself just as well as it always has. The only problem is this crazy idle. The saw does not die at idle, so it's mostly just a minor annoyance, but I would love to figure it out. So after researching it wherever I could find some info, here is what I have tried; I have checked the strato butterfly to make sure it is closing all the way. I have done the reset in the start position several times. I've checked the fuel line and filter, and from what I can tell, the saw does not act like it has an air leak or a plugged carb. I've dumped the gas, cleaned out the tank, and started all over with fresh gas. My dealer does not have the diagnostic tool yet, but he say's he needs to get it anyway, so that might end up being what it takes, but I hope I can fix it myself without paying a service fee. If anyone has any suggestions of what to try, I would greatly appreciate the help! TIA!!!

The reset is more involved then just the 'start' position. I'm not questioning you just want to make sure you were informed correctly on the reset. The manual re-calibration is to leave in the start position for 45-60 seconds, shut off, restart and leave in the run position for 45-60 seconds, shut off, start up and make 5 consecutive cuts, shut off and you are complete. Having said that I would try that first but I have a feeling you have a torn intake boot. They updated to make them stronger. Symptoms would be a slow return to idle and faster idle.

I'll have to figure out some way to get a video. All I have is an older digital camera, and it doesn't do video, and my phone is old and doesn't do video either. The saw does not hang at high throttle. It comes down to an idle as soon as you release the trigger, and idles slow enough that the chain does not move. It just hunts around. I'll check the intake boot just to be safe. I've always wondered about m-tronic, and if it would compensate enough to mask something like a torn boot. The way I done the reset was I started the saw on the start position, let it run in start for 90 seconds, then moved it straight to off. Then I restarted it and made a couple of test cuts. I will try it as cobby08 said above, and see if that does better. Stihl mechanic says that he thinks I should remove the solenoid and try cleaning it with a little gas, but I don't know how comfortable I would be doing that.

I've had two with torn boots; it can overcome the ripped boot. Kinda cool really, better then the alternative.

Sorry for taking so long to update this thread, but I wanted to let everyone know the outcome of this issue. Apparently on these saws using the wrong spark plug can mess with the m-tronic. I chucked the old plug last time I cleaned the saw up, and the replacement was a Champion CJ7 non resistor plug. The dealer sold me the right plug, and told me to always use a resistor plug with the m-tronic saws. Everything seems to be back to normal now, and the saw actually seems to have more power. I would've never guessed that the plug could make so much difference!
