044 440.jpg The one on the right was on a MS440. The one on the left was on a 044. Was wondering about the broken fin and because of the weight, should I want one like the 440 one? Not enough difference to make it matter?

Don't think it makes a lot of difference, but of the 2 the 044 is preferred. I have also heard some people say they break off the opposing fin to keep things in balance. If you don't need it for another saw, I would use the 044 flywheel, but would not throw the 440 one away.

Likely some idiot tried to freeze the saw with a screwdriver against the flywheel instead of blocking the piston.

Are my eyes playing with the pic on me or are those key ways a tad bit different with their locations to the magnets? 044 looking slightly advanced.

Tough to tell from the pic, the magnets don't even look the same size.

The earlier 044s had a heavier flywheel. The one that I had Randy put on my hybrid was off an early saw, and was made in Japan.

Some people say that the heavier one will give the saw more torque.

They look pretty close to me.

I messed with flywheel weights a lot on a 064 hybrid and never could tell any difference from a stock one to one that barely has anything left.

The lighter the flywheel the smoother the vibs is all I noticed

I vote not enough difference to make it matter.

A heavy vs. light flywheel shouldn't change power at all. Lighter will give faster spoolup, heavier a bit more torque the split second the chain hits the wood because of more stored kinetic energy.

They may make a Saw feel different though.

When I'm building the hybrids, I prefer the early, heavier flywheel. It seems to work better with the larger top end.

On modern chainsaw flywheels, there's no need to break an opposing fin off. The weight of a single cooling fin isn't enough to put the flywheel "out of balance".

The gyroscopic effect is greater when the flywheel is in motion than the weight of a single or a few cooling fins.
