A friend in the tree service business has a Stihl 084 he would like to use on occasion. It is missing the muffler cover. He's been told that if he runs it that way, he will hurt the engine. Is that true?

I've looked on eBay for used and no luck there.

Big saw and I doubt he would put a lot of hours on it each year.

Thanks.

Assuming he doesn't care about the loud noise are y'all saying it will hurt the engine without a muffler cover?

Basically yes it will in the long term. The saw will be hard to tune properly. Not to mention the debri that will enter the engine and chew it up. Imo it isn’t worth the risk on a big saw like that especially one that is getting older with a bunch of NLA parts that are hard to find.
