I have used several Cross Cylinders on 660s. As Kevin stated, a common problem with them is the bevel on the lower side of the exhaust port is not sufficient, and if not corrected is likely to catch a ring. (Your damage looks like the ring caught on the bottom of the exhaust port on the downstroke).

I always check the bevels on all cylinders I install, but it is especially important to do with the AM cylinders, all of them!

I have not had problems with the Cross rings and pistons, but I replace most AM pistons with Meteor or OEM.

Also, I always use OEM piston pin bearings, a bad bearing can also cause this.
