Ya, this seems to be a problem with them. Had a friend that purchases a new saw and 6 months later it did something like this....but not this bad.
It was adjusted at the dealer new and never touched. He took it back to the dealer after the explosion. They disassembled and said it musta been a faulty piston. Stihl wanted to see it so it was sent to them.... Dealer was going to cover it at that time.
Stihls report was saw was over reed 2% of the time and they said they wouldn't warranty it. Dealer backed out than too. Was was never returned and no reimbursement of any kind..he got the ol double wammy.....no replacement as promised by dealer and Stihl USA kept his saw.....
He now run Husqvarna....don't blame him.

Is the 461 rev limited? If so, how could the factory claim it was overrevved 2% of the time - after all, it would be a fault of their hardware that led to the overrev.

EDIT: It looks like the fracture started at the back of the ring groove on one side of the piston and finally let go, then tore the other side off. Besides metallurgy, perhaps there is a sharp corner in the back of the groove that localizes the forces.

Just what the dealer told him that Stull said.
I'm thinking they are Terry as it seems every saw is anymore.
