I've seen older Stihl documents showing the orientation facing up, though newer documents show it facing down.

I've talked with my local Stihl dealer who's been wrenching on stihls since the 60's and he said he's never had an issue regardless or orientation.

I was just thinking about this yesterday. I always do the opposite of this bulletin.

I always installed them this way, but I put a little dab of Threebond/Yamabond over the junction of the case halves on either side just in case the case gasket shrinks up.
That's a good idea J

I just ran into this over the weekend. Had a leak right where the case halves meet the cylinder base. Gonna give this a try.

I tried a new base gasket so it was definitely the case gaskets. Someone recommended splitting the case to replace the gasket but for such a small leak I thought I might limp it along with some sealant.
