i'm hesitant to put this up because of the results of the hd2. I think the oil residue left over from the max flow held the saw dust. But then again that would mean that saw dust does indeed get under the hd2 filter. With out the oil residue there, I assume it wouldn't get stuck and just continue to flow under the filter.

Anyway I am going to re run the hd2 single tank again with a cleaned air tank manifold with no oil residue on it and see what happens.

Anyone else notice this much build up on their 661 hd2 filter?

As far as the build up on the filter itself. Max flow has 30 tanks on it and hd2 has ONE. Gotta hand it to max flow. I'm impressed.

As an alternative to buying a max flow, I've heard of ppl putting a layer of grease on the bottom of the hd2 to trap dust from getting between the filter and the base. Watching ur videos made buying one an easy decision for me, so appreciate all the testing!

A properly maintained Max-Flow will go quite a while between cleanings. When I first started using them, I was running vegetable oil. That doesn't last as long though.

I ran one tank on my 661 as well with the hd2 when I got it. Wasn't quite that bad but was pretty close. The hd2 is never going back on my 661.

I know some guys may not mind the HD2 but 30 tanks!!!

Probably clean mine at 20.

Will start fresh this spring, ran about 17-18 tanks as is

Will be cool to see how much the filter stopped in the dish after washing

- here is max flow cage and back plate. It's designed to accept the 661 air filter cover knob.

- here is a 661 hd2 filter modified - cut some of the pleated material out....it's held up. (I didn't think it would) have to give credit to brad snelling on that one.

- also is a back plate I made by cutting up a 661 air filter cover. It's very important that the outside of it match up against the outside edge of the filter cage(max flow or modified hd2 filter). Otherwise if it's smaller than that, it won't compress the filter down. ask me now i know :D

Do you all feel this is "Just" down to the hd2 filter or the air flow /case and filter combo ?

The whole combo to me just sorta sucks. But, I think I sorta get why Stihl did it this way.

The AT Huskys have trouble with heat soak because of their top cover design. I wonder if Stihl was looking to avoid heat related issues when they made the air intake independent of the cylinder shroud.

Of coarse.....the 261, and 362 both have one piece top covers, air injection, and seem to be fine....

Not worked on the 661 myself Randy...so is the filter box force fed ?
Have worked on the Dolmar 9010 with its older sort of 2 section cover but has a much simpler filter unit.
