you can advance the timing, cut key, a lot and the coil will the timing where it wants it. there are gains to be had by cutting the key because it lets the coil advance more at high rpm. I put a timing light on it with stock key and with cut key. timing at idle did not change.

Thats some valuable info, thanks!

Very interesting Scott. About how much does it advance when stock, and about how much more to reach "optimum"?

I took about .020 off the 362 C flywheel, and it helped, but no idea if that was optimal or not.

Also, if I'm correctly following how MTron works, than it won't go "too far" even if you give it too much rope?

when I checked timing on the 261 m-tronic, the timing changed at idle with cutting the key, the timing also jumped when it advances. the 661 timing changes smooth as the rpm's increase

The 661 coil might work better on the 261 than it does on the 661. You've done a lot of testing on those buggers sounds like. Have you been changing up the strato ports at all or leaving them alone? I'm wondering if those could be configured to make more power somehow?

you can over cut the key on a 661 without it hurting performance much. but you can go to far on a 261. the 261 is not as smart as the 661

Basically the fresh air is creating a "Dam" between the fuel charge and the exhaust gasses (pressure differential) and pushes the spent gasses out of the exhaust port so less of the fuel charge is lost out of the muffler before having a chance to ignite and do work.
and hence better fuel economy as fuel is used only for the burn and not the pushing, only fresh air is.

Is the coil on the MTronic 261 limited? I have OE standard carb saws & I can tune my porded one out above 15k so I guess the OE is unlimited. Its good when TM climbs down the tree & starts talking saw stuffs.

Does anyone have a bad (known or unknown) mtronic coil laying around?
The newer the better.
I do not want to waste good $$ on a new one that will never see the inside of a saw.
