I guess I'm in the stone age running .325 pitch on both of my Stihl 026 Pro's. One of these days I'll try experimenting. But, .325 works so well that I hate to take the plunge. Just MHO.
You're not missing anything, unless you can perceive two or three tenths of a second on a 9 second cut. I've tried everything but .404 lol. There simply are no magic bullets. I had my 241 running 1/4" for a while, ultra smooth, but limited to semi-chisel in that pitch.

I also suspect that I was not missing anything. Stihl still recommends the .325 pitch saw for the 261. I find nothing wrong with that combination. I recall changing out a 291 that I sold last year from .325 full chisel to .375 semi-chisel, only because I had lots of semi-chisel chain available in my shop. It was a small nightmare. The saw acted like it was under stress running 3/8" pitch chain. It had a heckuva time pulling it.
