My brother's 27 ton Champion log splitter had the tarp get blown off and rain soaked. He tried to start it so my take was that there was water in the intake and he probably sucked that in to the carb by trying to start it. Honda knock off engine, around 8 hp. How would you get the water out of the system to get it to start. He flushed out the gas, put in new gas, no change.

Taking the carb apart and cleaning it is the best way to assure it's clean and dry.

Drain the carb bowl into a container to see if water in it

Ok, thanks for the advice. I checked with my brother who did not let me try to fix it and he had the small engine mechanic check it out and $150 or so later it runs again.

I'm assuming this is not an easy fix without pulling the carb? There was a water fuel mix in the cavity when the air filter was pulled off.

Depends on your skill set. I can have it apart, cleaned, reassembled in a half hour or less. Usually though on those Honda clone Chinese engines I put a genuine Honda carb on them when they have issues.

We're still having engine run problems, runs and then cuts off. Dropped it off at brother's and he said it was hardly running.

Could this be an engine cut off issue? The oil was recently changed out by a shop. I assume the hydraulic oil level will not cause engine to not run.

Another possibility is fuel flow connected to tank to carb.. I have been using regular and trying not to run it empty but add gas before that.

No level sensors on the hydraulic side. Did you actually check the engine oil level? Is it full? Don't bother with the silly dipstick on the filler plug. Oil level should be level with the filler hole.

I just got off the phone with my brother, he will check engine oil, he added a gallon of hydraulic which tends to leak.

How much would a replacement carb cost? How about ethanol free high test gas?

Replacement china carbs are cheap. 10-15 bucks.

I went over to my older brother's. We checked everything, it would run for some seconds then die. Recently serviced including oil change. It did not occur to us that the oil level sensor could be the problem; when 10 or so ozs of 10-30 was added it started running ok.

I split about 8 or more cords in the last week. Sporadically had the engine cut out. Picked up a quart of oil, added about 20s oz and it did not cut out again yesterday. So I figured I'd add the rest of the 10w30 and it sporadically threw off oil, overfilled, so I drained out the excess put it in with the bar oil, and it ran well again. Not sure how much oil it is burning but enough.

Run 30wt or 15w40 in the summer. 10w30 is quite thin at 300 degrees.

Maybe it’s in the sensor or wiring, a little corrosion from rain can really futz with connection.

On all my splash type engines, I cut the dipstick off, lol. When I bought my BCS tractor, the dealer actually did it to my 390 Honda.
