After multiple cuttings, fitting and welding it’s within a couple more hours of work and it will be ready. The winch will mount on the angled plate that is on the upright just to right of the small of the frame V. A fairlead will be mounted on top of the arch. Tongue will be shortened and the removed section will act as a brace between top of arch back to winch upright. The tires are foam filled to prevent flats. Need to weld 2 chains to the arch to use to wrap around and secure log once it’s lifted by the winch. Not really pretty but way cheaper than buying.75224283-EA4D-4BA3-A5DB-DF9B9D48927F.jpeg

That should work out nicely. And a good use of a crappy old boat trailer. Gotta be way cheaper than buying new components.

Gonna work great when you’re done. Good use for that old boat trailer.

So really more of a skid than lift? At least that’s what I’m getting from description and picture

The winch will lift the majority of the logs weight off the ground so that only the end will have ground contact, eliminating friction and drag weight. Yes, it’s not designed to actually carry the entire weight of the log. I’ll post some vids in action when it’s in operation.

Fwiw I think the upright should be slanted toward the tongue. The way it is now under tension I think it may actually lift up on the tongue. Taking away traction.

Nice work great fab. You have more vision and gumption than I do.

Just got good news today. Stopped and asked a landowner that I’ve cut on his property before if I could have a big oak that went over near the road. Said he didn’t know about it but I could have it. Told me 2 more big oaks and 2 big cherry trees went down over the hill behind the equipment shed, get them out of there too! PTL! He had oaks logged out a couple years ago and a bunch of people were cutting where the logs were hauled out and limbed. Me and my buddy were the only ones that cleaned up and threw scrap wood back into the wood line. We’re the only ones allowed back. The arch will see more duty.

The uprights are position directly over the axles, should prevent tongue lift.

Here is a technical document I hope all can interpret. When setting still yes but as you move forward the wheels become a pivot point. The drag from the log exerts a force on the arch. They higher up the more leverage.

I’ll have a couple feet of log past the pivot point towards the tongue but if it doesn’t work then there’s going to be a whole lot of cutting and rewelding going on.

On the really big stuff start a combo noodle/milling cut the length of the log then drive wedges to split it, only handling half the weight then. Not recommended for knotty sections.

I think you are right! Once it reaches a certain point it will lift the tongue. There will probly have to be some mods made. Just moving with a log on will want to lift the front. Real skidders are the same way if you watch em in action.
