Just thinking here....do you guys think that with the meteor wrist pin being short and allowing for some movement, that could led to some of the meteor c-clip failures that some people see?

Like can that wrist pin move side to side and "bash" into the clips?

stihl saws

You can always justify another saw.

Is there a reason the meteor pin is shorter than the Stihl? I've noticed this on my 026, 024 and if I recall correctly, my 346. Being a little shorter does leave some side to side "slop." Does that matter?

I have used the OEM ones per the Docs recommendation on all the above saws.
I had never noticed this till you mentioned it. Meteor pins are shorter. I only have a 024 Meteor for comparison, but I don't see any way a oem pin can fit. I've tried several oem pins and none gave room for the clip.

Can you shorten the OEM to fit in the meteor? Just grind it shorter? It wouldn't take much. I didn't have this problem on the 026 meteor piston, but my 024 is just like you said.

The Meteor I got from HLS came with one and the one I got from Dave didn't. But I will clarify that when I ordered the one from HLS it showed up as a line item like I ordered it just with no price next to it. And I have no idea what brand it is ether.
Standard practice from HLS Bruce did that for most topends going out.

It sounds like everybody's anti aftermarket wrist pin bearings, what about the pins themselves?
WORSE they are usually under spec 3-5 ten thou in dia. Too short and too damn heavy.

That would be more than an sae ton

Is that before or after porting?

I think c-clip failures are from being installed wrong.
The cheap am clips will work but there easier to bend and that causes problems.
I save every oem clip that isn't bent and will use them over a new am clip.
Yup Yup Oh and yup

What about aftermarket clutch bearings??
No problems so far with the steel cage units. I don't like the AM plastic ones.

I will spend time shortening an OEM pin if I don't have an OE pin to fit my build. I like 30-40 thou of end play. Not much less but no more than 60 tops!

AM pins are all soft and just *s-word IMO.

Your googles, go get them. Take an AM wrist pin put it in your vice half sticking up. Pound it flat with your favorite BFH. Try it with OEM. Post your results with pics of the metal mush. You will find that the OE metal brindles and fractures more. What is it showing you? The metal is harder.
