Scott, hope you can help me with this. I just got a recently rebuilt 12 m/m slant fin 044, just 2 tanks thru it, was running great, then suddenly I can,t pull it over, two thumps then it just rips my fingers off, vicious back pull on the rope.
Rolls over fine with plug out, comp test pulled up 151 lbs., pulled the flywheel, key is good. Would coil do this?

I think your saw is suffering from Hydro Lock. Your carb is slowly leaking into the combustion chamber making it impossible to pull over.

Often it is the fuel lever that is leaking.

Fix or replace the carb and you s/b OK.

Plug & cyl are actually dry: when starting cold it has taken 6 or 7 pulls to get fuel up but then it would start instantly.
I was just wondering if the coil was stuck on high advance, I have another coil coming.

The 044 used a dummy coil - it doesn't (or shouldn't have) have a circuit to advance timing (unless someone put a different coil on your saw). It could be that your flywheel is out of position.

It worked just fine for 2 tanks of fuel, then I took it into the shop to clean up the bar & chain after cutting up a rotten old stump, when I tried to start it to run some oil on the chain I get kickback.
I pulled the flywheel, key is intact.

What does the plug look like? (and what plug do you have in it?)
It's a new NGK, it was my saw that I ran before @old guy picked it up. It ran good for me and for him for a couple tanks. Im gonna send him a coil to try.

If it were "hydro locked" it would do it with a comp tester in too I'm guessing. Almost has to be ignition related.

Was the coil the original OEM or aftermarket? I've heard of the aftermarket coils going out of time - it can happen to OEM coils as well but it's very rare.

I had the same problem with mine but the whole side of the key had been filed off and it was flopping around in the keyway:eek:, the kickback was vicious, put a new key in it and problem solved. Since your key is stock I would guess coil.

@jacob j. Correct me if I'm wrong but 026,036, 044 and so on coils all interchange?

Pretty much, except the later 026/036 and MS-260/360 saws got an updated coil that used the same part number, but had a different shape.

I can't remember what the change was - likely a circuit to retard timing at start up. Those coils work on the 044 ok though.

Old guy could check the plug terminal inside the boot - sometimes those break apart from wear. They'll make the saw finicky when they break.

Thanks for all input Guys. I got it started today and I have a new theory: I'm going to be 80 years of age in another month and between it picking up a little more comp & me being tired from the afternoons work, I just couldn't pull it over. I'll put a D handle on SOB!
