Doesn't sound like there's a decision to be made. The 461 is one of the best 70cc class saws ever made, IMHO....I'm not a mtronic fan and don't want to miss out on the tried and true 461.
What does everyone think?
This is the first I've ever heard of heat issues in the 461. I would find that very surprising. Were they running with trimmed limiters and properly tuned carbs?I've seen a couple of weird piston burns on 461s from the local tree guys. When you factor in that the vast majority of their saws are still 460s, you start to question things.
The only reason for that internal "bridge" in the 461 is to cool the piston. That has to tell you something.
Get rid of the heat problem, and I think they are great saws.

So much damage on the intake side? No, they were 100% stock. You do know that is the only reason for that internal bridge? (see pic #2).
A 461 piston failure from this year, and one from last year. (different users). A high ratio for the # of them in use.
I believe with muff mods and limiters out, they would be fine, and they have been since I did that to them.

Mike, how do you know with such certainty that is the only reason it is there? Do you have an insider at stihl engineering I don’t know about?
I believe the video is from Stephen who has been doing the porting in this thread. I’ve been wrong before.
Mike is talking about the 461
I must have missed that one.

Randy researched it and reported it.
The MS 462 has a bridge too.
Its part of the crankcase.
The one looks like it was run with little to no air filtration, then finally failed. The other looks like a piston failure as well.So much damage on the intake side?
