Hi all,

I started working on a website for the firewood business myself and my sons decided to start. I got sucked into building a firewood calculator which at first was just a simple cu/ft and cordage type calculator. But somehow ended up going far past that.

Posting it here as I figure some here might find it useful, feedback is welcome, I hope you guys like it!

Note: Results in Heating Energy and Weight are dynamic and affected by whether you choose wet or dry for "Wood Condition".

Sooo I got the multiple wood types completed today, mixed load calculations now possible!

You can select up to 4 "WoodTypes" and set a % for each (must equal 100%). Weight and BTU totals will be affected by this change.

I have not forgot about adding metric, it is coming :)

The calculator has been used 500 times in the last 24 hours, great to see!

Few more things incoming:

- Option to use it in "stack" mode or pile mode for loose piles.
- Switch between metric and imperial
- Some more wood types to add
- In stack mode options to set number of rows and gap size.
- Option to set wood stove / burner efficiency %.

Any way you could add a preemptive field/calculator to generate a Cord Quantity amount from starting with inputs of log length & diameter? I'm sure there's other calculators to derive this separately...I just thought "one stop shopping" with yours might be kinda nice :) ... happy chainsawing and Merry Christmas from Leduc, AB

I have started working on a wood volume calculator which can do this. It will be able to calculate volume of a single tree or many. I am making it seperate from the firewood calculator because I don't want the firewood calculator becoming too busy, it also requires a pretty good chunk of code and the firewood calculator page is already getting pretty big, even with moving much of the data and functions into its own API / database on another server.

Been awhile!

There have been a ton of changes and improvements to the calculator. Here are some of the big improvements:

- Supports mixed wood stacks, up to four types of wood.

- The data that it uses has changed. I have found that available data for a wide variety of wood types is pretty inconsistent and in many cases sources are not given. So I have attempted to provide some standardization on how figures like BTU and weight are arrived at. It was a pretty big project but I think it has turned out well. You can read about it here: https://boisafeudunord.com/blog/how-i-built-my-firewood-btu-ratings/

- Better handling of field inputs and supports for decimal places.

Pretty big update today, here is what has been done and is now live:

- Improved wood type grouping and changed naming. Now all "Oak" or "Birch" for example are grouped together.
- Added "group" to all "tree_species" in API data for greater flexibility.
- Added some Eucalyptus wood types commonly used in Australia as firewood for our friends down under.
- Wood type dropdown is now more intuitive, selection boxes have been added to clearly indicate a wood type has been selected.
- Search function added to Wood Types selection.
- Bug fixed where absolute 100% was required in wood selection % fields, maing it impossible to select three wood types and calculate.
- Woodpile width default unit changed from in to ft.
- Made text under wood type selection dynamic reflecting what the user has selected or not selected. Changed color for better visibility.
- Wood type % percentage fields now auto-fill based on amount of wood types selected. 1 = 100%, 2 = 50% and so on. These are still editible by the user, auto-fill just streamlines things and makes a bit more intuitive.
- Email: You can now have calculator output emailed to you (your email is not stored).

I have delivered firewood for 20 years or more. A precise firewood calculator like Nord is trying to build is likely an impossible mission. There are too many variables. What I usually hear after I deliver and stack split hardwoods is usually what the customer asks: "How on earth did you get that much firewood packed into your truck?"

That is really all I need to hear to make my delivery successful. Just MHO. :)
