My 350 TLC project is nearing completion. Learned so much- this is my first venture into a chainsaw past a new fuel line in an old Poulan-Craftsman, and the usual bar-chain-tuneup stuff.
Including self-inflicted anguish getting a piston back into the cylinder. But, "it is what it is..."

And then there was the 2nd of the two cir-clips to hold the piston. The one that sort-of launched itself out of the needle nose pliers, and sounded like it didn't go far. That I can't find. Sweeping. Vacuuming the crack between the ceramic tile and the stairs. Ceramic-magnet-telescoping-part-retriever to every conceivable nook and cranny. Nothing. Zip. Zero. Nada. (Extra credit if you know the radio personality that used those words in that order...)

So I got online. HL Supply and Husqvarna both had the clips. No surprise there. But.
Husqnarna $2.99 per clip. (I ordered 2 for the obvious reason.) Ouch. But HLS wanted $3.99. But there's more. Husq. charges me sales tax, HLS not. But Husq. wanted $5.99 for FedEx shipping; HLS Flat Rate $11.95 or FedEx about $15 as I recall. So I spent almost $13 at Husq. instead of almost $20 at HLS, for snail-mail shipping.

But there's more. The rings came in Monday's mail. The "Oops" happened Tuesday a.m. Husq. shipped the same day. FedEx tracking says it will arrive about this time tomorrow! Really?! Seriously?! And for a larger order, Husq. free shipping starts at $50, HLS at $125. I didn't do it this time, because I just did it on my previous Husq. OEM parts order, but it's not really extravagant to add in a chain to get past $50 on a small parts order.

Anyway, I check Husky on most orders. Never know. Just sayin'...

So you’re saying to check prices with the manufacturer instead of assuming a parts order will be cheaper if purchasing online? If that’s what you’re saying, I agree.

But Husqvarna in particular has terrible back-order problems on many parts. I’m still waiting on some parts I ordered in June.

There’s no solid rule to ordering parts. Sometimes I get a better deal on HLS, or Ebay, or Traverse Creek, or Wolf Creek or Sawsalvage or even SawAgain. Sometimes the dealership has the part for less than anyone online. Sometimes PartsTree has a part that’s NLA or some random hardware store in Oklahoma is doing an online parts clearance at prices from 1995. Let’s not forget House of Homelite or Leonidus in Athens. You never know.

With something cheap like circlips, the $4 savings isn’t worth 30 minutes of searching and comparing prices. Go with who you like.

Yeah, well, mostly. Remember that I'm brand new at ordering chainsaw parts. I'll copy down the suppliers you mentioned- most are new to me. Also working on two 1980's Poulan-Craftsmans, so the salvage aspect is beneficial too. This post was worth the trouble just for that. Thank you!

But you're off on a few other assumptions. Do I think that anyone here needs me to tell them to check multiple suppliers, including the manufacturer? No. I had a fortuitous good experience specifically with Husqvarna that I simply thought was worth the mention. And maybe go back and read it all again. I screwed up. The saw would be running but I lost the clip. I felt really stupid. And they shipped same day. And FedEx says it's coming in a few hours. That's pretty cool under my self-imposed unfortunate circumstances. Sorry about your backorders. You don't need to read something condescending about my experiences with backorders...

And I saved $7, not $4. And this project has been in-for-a-penny-in-for-a-pound from the beginning. Broke piston rings that I didn't need to. More learning-curve stuff. So, right now, $7 is.... $7! Using the survey that's on every McDonald's receipt, for a BOGO sandwich, that's two Double Quarter-Pounders with Cheese. With two senior drinks, that's lunch for me and my wife. Sure stretches the S.S. checks...
And I checked two sources. In about three minutes...

And, yeah, in my limited newbie experience, Amazon and Ebay can both have the "Fill Dirt, Croissants, and OPE parts" (the Far Side cartoons from decades age) sources as you mentioned. Sometimes you get same-month shipping, but if you get the part that nobody else has...

And, no, I have no clue what TL/DR is...
Its short for "Too Long/Didn't Read". Sometimes with lengthy explanations people at the end will put "TL/DR" and then give a brief summary of the entire write up for those who don't want to/don't have (take) time to read through the lengthy portion of the message.

I get it. Wow. I can save a lot of trouble! For me: KISS. For them, YDR/DWMT.

“Jeff’s Fill Dirt and Croissants” brought me back to a good place. Glad you had a good experience. I’ve certainly sent a circlip off into oblivion. Getting two new ones in the mail same-day is pretty sweet.

Well you can't make this up. (Too long, don't read- you know who you are...)
Asked wife for the Forest Helmet Technical for my birthday. A few months off yet, but I've been doing tree and wood work...
She ordered. They said thanks for your $; FedEx 2-5 days. Cool. Two weeks, nothing. She makes inquiry to Husq. It's not available. Fancy feel-good words that really mean that they don't have a clue. Can give refund and cancel order. Try these other sources. Do I feel stupid?! I'm a big boy; I can take it.

Oh yeah. Naturally I found the circlip yesterday...
