I have a problem that so far I have not found a solution to, I am replacing crankshaft seals on a 55 rancher.
I made a homemade tool to pull the worm gear off of the clutch side shaft and changed seal, there is no step on the shaft to
locate the gear depth, it is straight from the case bearing all the way to the clutch bearing step.
I didn't think to measure the gear depth before removal. The shop manual says to press against the shoulder of the crank but
I don't have a shoulder, the gear can be pressed all the way into the seal.
Can anyone measure the shaft and tell me how far the gear needs to be pressed?
Thanks in advance, Steve K.

I believe it presses in till it stops but it has been a while since I put one of these together.
You can see the change in shaft diameter 1000013066.jpg

Thank you all who gave advice, the stop was almost polished away from someone sanding on the shaft removing a groove where the seal rides.
I was able to see it with a magnifying glass and set the depth.

That is good to hear that the previous mechanic didn't totally obliterate the stop. Some of those type of things are already small and faint to begin with. Someone just dropped off a 61 for me to work on...I really like this series of saws to work on!! Makes me want to start getting parts to build my 55.
