My buddy has 372xp that he bought new in 2008 and is all stock. It has 40* of timing advance with a timing light. It runs and starts great dose that sound right?

I'm not working on the chainsaw at all. My buddy and his friend were comparing a couple of 372's and checking timing advancement. He then asked me what I thought about 40° of advancement On a stock saw. I thought it seemed like a lot.

I'll try to get him to sign up login and post his own questions.

40 degrees seem like alot for just about gasoline powered engine IMO. But I'm no expert by any means. Makes me want to put a degree wheel on one of my 250r just to see...

You said they were comparing a couple of 372's, were they both the same?

Thanks to czar I'm logged in. Friend built 372 from parts with aftermarket coil so we were comparing my mostly stock 372 with his. Project saw had 13 at idle and advanced to 23 total. My stock saw idled at 40 with no advance. Everything i have read saws thats to much. Thanks for all the replies.

40 degrees beyond stock....not sure that saw would run. they tend to "pop" if advanced too much and will tend to rip starter out your hand

Welcome aboard Patchy1.

So yours has a stock coil that is 40 deg all the time?

I would think he would be suffering busted knuckles and recoil components with 40 deg of timing...

I would agree. :nusenuse:

I'm not a husky kinda guy... That's why I asked.

I wonder if it sheared the flywheel key? but there's no symptoms of a shared key.

Thanks for the input at nieces birthday party couldn't respond. Saw has stock coil and starts well with out compression release runs great. Pulled flywheel and it was not sheared. Does this coil have advance built in and what are stock numbers.

as long as the key isn't sheared, then you have stock timing....which is fine. 40 degrees of advance beyond stock would be a lot. far as I know, 372 doesn't really need any advance timing to be good. I don't advance mine. other models...different story

Have you ever found this much advance on a stock ignition. Most peaple are saying this is to much. We used two different timing guns and are positive of tdc. Was only doing this as a reference for the other saw were building

I've built at least 50 saws ... never checked timing w/ a gun. timing is always in reference to stock.... never had an issue with a stock ignition key/ coil being off by enough to notice a problem.

Are you saying that the coil is firing at 40° BTDC when checked with a timing light? Is this while cranking or running? If while running that may be correct but sounds like an awful lot while cranking. I know some coils have a built in advance that is supposed to kick in above a certain RPM, have heard of them getting stuck in the advanced position.

Just talked to my buddy with the other saw he used adrill to check timing in stead of running saw and numbers are much closer heading to his place tomorrow to try with my saw. Thanks for the info will post tomorrow.Turning saw with drill timing light worked better thinking timing lights not meant to check at high rpms
