I stopped at my HD today after work and they had a pretty clean 4300 for $193. I asked if that was the best price on it and the guy told me that they had just put it out and the price would come down in a week or two if it didn't sell.

I figure a new one goes for about $300 so $193 for used is a little rich for my blood but if they'd come down to $160 I'd be seriously thinking about it.

@MustangMike. I believe you are correct on the power to wieght ratio. While only holding a 5105 w/20"bar it just "feels" heavier than a stihl 262. They may be better while cutting... Idk. But if I'm holding a 5-6 hundred dollar price tag I'd like to at least feel good.

I run a 20” 3/8 light weight bar on my 5100s. Its ported and can handle it. It’s my heaviest 50cc. However, with a .325 18” it really isn’t that much heavier than my 346xp with the same bar. My 026pro and 545 are lighter, but again it’s not that much more.

I had a 6421 and yes it is big and heavy for a 60cc class saw. Power wise they are pretty impressive for 64cc. However as a 7910, they are truly awesome. Ported they are hard to beat.

I stopped at a different HD on the way to work this morning. They had a 4300. Wow it was beat. I don’t know if I would have paid $100. They were listing it for $193.

In contrast, the 6421 I saw last night led what looked to be an easy life. They barely scribed their id number on the handle. Could be a nice saw if I really needed one.

I don't really think of the 5105 as being a direct competitor to the 261 and 346. I see it as being a saw which can serve that role but also has more low end grunt for the thick stuff and is a little more heavy duty. When you need a step up from the 261/346 but don't want bring a second saw or break out the big guns, the 5105 is just perfect.

I concur and would like to enter the following evidence...

I wonder if it doesn’t vary. The saws I looked at showed 1/25 and 1/26 for dates. This was a two different stores.

Who knows with corporate stuff these days. He just mentioned that at the first of the month they get a list of what needs to go. You would thing they have a formula of number of rentals before being sold or something smart like that.

Picked this up yesterday.
I was told the same thing about them putting new items up for sale at the beginning of each month. This one came up for sale two days ago, on the 29th, so I guess it may vary a little. I have never seen them update before the 1st before.

This one I got to $300.00, which is typical. It seems $300.00 is the price the rental guys can go down to without a managers approval. I bought two of these last year, at a much lower price because one was a non runner, and they needed to call in a manager to “unlock” the price.
Some of the guys have shown me the price list in the past. The lowest they’ll take is $275.00. They don’t seem too interested in bargaining too much, since they know the saws will sell anyways. They only go down to the lowest price if the saw sits for a while.

This one came with a Makita bar in decent shape. The other ones I have gotten have all had the black bar and Tri Link chain. They were out of chains yesterday, so I didn’t get one. They said I can come back and get one, but I have 5-6 of those chains kicking around already, so I don’t need another one.

I also look the saws over pretty good, and ask to start them. This one was missing a couple of small things like the sprocket, chip deflector and a few other things. The guy picked all the missing stuff off of a non runner and made sure my saw was complete.

This is a 2016, and pretty nice and clean. Gotta try and find something that’ll take off the paint marker on the the top cover, without messing up the plastic. All the other saws I’ve gotten have had the numbers scribed into the footpad.

Edited for grammar.

Maybe “goo gone” or “goof off” might work.

It looks clean. I’m sure that it will serve you well.

It was interesting that the store that had the 6421 had very clean tools. Even the demolition saws were cleaned. However, the store that had the 4300, well everything was filthy. It was like the saw came back from being rented and placed on the shelf without being cleaned at all. The plastic clutch cover was sort of twisted and did not fit properly. The id number was etched on the handle and on the steel under the spur sprocket.
