Hello, last month my 029 super was stolen. I found one on fb marketplace with identical marks as mine. The guy selling it sent me a picture of only a serial number and not the whole saw. And refused to send a picture of the saw and serial number.

I was hoping someone could look up this serial number and get the model for it? Serial number he sent is 244004101. Thank you for any help or knowledge!

Hi buddy I looked up the number you gave came up empty. Somewhere around the bottom of the gas tank is an 11 digit number if it starts 1127 its a 029 039 hope this helps.
What does it mean if it came up empty? There is a number where the chain goes that starts with 1127. I was hoping to get definite answer. Probably no way to do that? Either way, though the guy said that he was Going Out of the country for 10 days. but sounded really shady.. and I'm assuming he said the 10 days to buy him some time. but even after 10 days he's gonna have to show the sheriff the exact chainsaw on marketplace with. That same serial number. . so if he's lying? I guess the truth will come out. but but thank you very much for your information. I really do appreciate it.

Sincerely,
Kristen

I think he meant that it does not show registered to anyone in Stihl's system, which is how it would tie the serial number to the saw. As far as I know there isn't a set serial number format to type of saw for Stihl saws to look up like you can do for some of the other brand saws out there.

Hello,
I bought a Stihl ms 290 on Facebook but I believe it is a MS 261, MS 271, or MS 291 because the parts number is 1141. The serial number is 503550148. Was wondering is anyone has thoughts or answers?

Can you take pictures and post them of the saw?

I am leaning to believe it is probably most likely a 291, though the 271 and 291 are almost identical except the 291 runs a 47mm piston and the 271 runs a 44.7mm piston. Without pulling the cylinder off, we won't know what you have there. The 261/271/291 are all in the same family of 1141, though if you look at part numbers, they are different in the end number between the 261 and others:

* MS 261 Crankcase fan side: 1141 020 2612
* MS 271 Crankcase fan side: 1141 020 3019
* MS 291 Crankcase fan side: 1141 020 3019

MS 290s look to start with 1127. I wish I had a way to look up your serial number, someone else on here might be able to. I have two 261s to look at and one starts with 528 and the other is 535, I also have two 271s and they start with 521 and 533....so not much help there.

If it has not been altered, you can look at the chain sprocket, if it has a rim sprocket, then probably a 261, if a spur sprocket then most likely a 271/291.

A 261 can also have a metal clutchcover with captured bar nuts and a decomp valve on the cylinder.

It will be a bummer if it ends up being a 271 instead of a 291 only for a bit of horsepower difference, but the 271 is a good saw, I like mine. The only think I have changed on it was trading out the spur sprocket for a rim sprocket for quicker swaps down the road. I rebuilt a 291 for friend and he is really happy with that saw the only bummer with the 271 and 291 them is the lack of aftermarket cylinders.

I see an old thread got brought up.

I/we have done exactly what you suggested several times. In about 1986 my cousin came up and said someone had gotten into their machine shed and stole his 4-wheeler. The bastards had to work at it as they had to carry it over a disk. Well about 5 days later they got into our shed and stole mine. We all figured it was a out of town theft ring......we were dead wrong. Probably a week later we had folks telling us that two farms west of us a group of teenagers were seen running around on wheelers that had not been there before. We called the county and they sent out a deputy. He went down there and did a cursory search but came up with nothing. It was in the Fall and the leaves were off the trees so a few days later Dad suggests that we take field glasses and take a look from around the farm. We farmed the place across from theirs and standing in that field we spotted the wheelers with field glasses. They had tried to conceal them in the brush. Of course we call the sheriff again. While waiting we ran down to the cousins and got Darrell and Matt. The police sent out detective Bush. We showed him where the four wheelers were. He said he could not press charges as the thieves would just claim someone dumped them there. Dad was pissed as hell. He looked at the cop and said "Well then I guess we will handle this our way". Ole detective Bush told us if we went on their land and retrieved the wheelers we could be prosecuted. Dad looked at him, shook his head and said "well fine then but I do not think your car seats enough does it". There were 5 of us there, Dad, my brother, myself, and two cousins. The detective said "give me three minutes to leave so I don't see anything". We went in and got both 4 wheelers back.
