I got a 2002 harrier to look at for a friend, he said it was making a funny noise. so I removed the head and when turning the fly wheel the piston stays still. so I then dropped the sump off to find the real problem.DSC_0751.JPGoopps

Ouch. Can it be fixed with a new connecting rod?

Sandpaper and JB Weld. Looks like plenty of what I've found in the bottom of funny car pans. I'd guess something sure made that piston and rod want to escape, the question is what.

Now come on you know all you need is a little duck tape. And I just got done removing a flywheel that the owner JB weld on. I have learned to hate that stuff.

Most time I find it is a lack of oiling the crank journal which causes aluminum transfer. Once this starts it is self promoting to a point where the rod overheats and shatters. The problem is it usually takes out the crankcase and cylinder too. It only takes one time running an engine without oil to do this.

unless that rod was annealed, it does appear the coloring suggests a wee bit of heat helping to contribute to the "let me outa here" behavior of said parts. Besides it's primary job of lubrication, oil aids in cooling metal. But heres the deal, IT HAS TO BE PRESENT in order to work. Slick 50 to the rescue? Well for a while anyway. Oh well, people that make and distribute parts gotta work too. I hope you got lucky and the block and cylinder can be salvaged.

Surprising the cylinder and block are OK, even the piston looks like it would go again. just the rod and the crankshaft have had the damage

I'may gald you can salvage the ylinder/block. Though, I would check that piston over a lot before I'd consider it again. If you can get a new one I'd seriously recommend going that route. Cracks, depressions, and collapse should be suspect.
