This thread is titled "Gun Range" so...
My son recently acquired a safe and brought his firearms home (from my safe). My dad in law gave him a Winchester model 12 in 16ga and a Rem 700 in 264 Win mag. My Marine Vietnam vet brother in law gifted him a freshly re-parked and re-stocked CMP M1 Garand for his high school graduation. Why didn't I have an uncle like that? He's a busy married mechanical engineer now. It's nice to finally have room to dig in my small safe.
He had a long weekend and requested a range trip. He wanted to shoot the M1 and the 264. I generally prefer handguns for range fun and was unhappy with a recent R92 44mag purchase. I wanted to run an experiment.
We shot the R92 first. This rifle seems to have an overbored barrel and to date patterns more like a shotgun. The nominal bullet diameter for 44mag is .429 but I picked up some .431 jacketed bullets and loaded up a .429/.431 comparison. I had thought that maybe the .429 rounds were skidding past the rifling and the .431 would grab and spin. Nope. Both loads were on 8.5x11 paper at 100 yards sighted via 1moa red dot. No difference in pattern size. Bummer!
Next up my son shot the M1 Garand. Here is the bench setup:
All I had printed were 10m pistol targets and he couldn't see the aiming black at 100 yd. I found some red paper, ripped it into squares and he stapled it over the aiming blacks at the next range cold.
Seems he could see the red diamonds. His next 100 yard group through the Garand iron peep sights was this:

Keep in mind the 10m air pistol target is on 8.8x11 paper. He has shot a bit like this on prior outings. He's got quarter-inch thick glasses. I don't get it. I'm going on 71 and he's 29. Could that have anything to do with this? I don't challenge him in any of a number of things any more. He does make time for me.
We expected killer recoil from the 264 Win Mag. Truth be told the M1 was soft, The 264 Win Mag was sharp and the R92 just plain hurt. We both agreed. Weird.
I brought a couple handguns to offer an alternate experience. I thought he might have the most fun with the new Colt Anaconda 6" 44mag and a Novak reworked 1970 Colt 1911. Pics of both exist somewhere here. He shot the handguns pretty well but I somehow did a little better. I centered a full house 300gn 44mag round on an x and decided to call it a day. No pic but it did happen.
