It’s probably been covered here before but what are you folks using for chronographs ?

Thoughts on the Garmin Xero’s ?

I bought one of these after my Caldwell died from lead poisoning. It's easy to use and it never missed a shot until I updated firmware last week. They've released a patch for that (3.32) but I haven't had it out since.

These aren't the only radar chrono's. A buddy has the older larger Labradar. IMO it is bulky and the acoustic triggering is unreliable. Battery life is miserable. I also think the packaging on these is poorly sorted and weak. He thought its ability to record several downrange reading was a valuable feature but I disagree and he has since come around. You need to be measuring out to 500-600 yards if you want to calculate a useful BC. The large Labradar with the larger antenna can maybe do 100 yards is all the stars are aligned.

Labradar has a smaller unit now. They left the downrange functions in the firmware to differentiate themselves from Garmin but IMO this was already worthless with the larger antenna. The unit is a bit larger and heavier than the Garmin. I have seen some posts claiming that the cast aluminum case is better than Garmins fiber reinforced plastic but I suspect it just cracks easier if dropped. Labradar also has a bad reputation for software quality and customer support.

Speaking of software quality, Garmins firmware issue IMO relates to competing with Labradars downrange feature. Garmin decided that a better way to get this done is to have one unit on the bench and another set however far downrange. The "Downrange Mode" added to firmware 3.30 makes the display flash when a shot is sensed. Anyone using this better have a spotter with a high power scope. As soon as you pull the trigger the rifle scope will be pointing to another zip code - you won't be seeing that little dim display flashing at 500 yards. You might however shoot your downrange unit. I'll leave the feature off. Garmin can check the box and claim they are competetive. My theory on the firmware issue is that the extra functions slowed the device to the extent that you could get a second shot off before the unit is ready. I'm pretty sure that is either correct or not. Anyway I was happy with the unit before "Downrange" was added. I'l remain happy with the unit with "Downrange" switched off.

There are several other radar based chronos recently brought to market. I haven't been shopping for one so don't know anything including the manufacturer names. You might want to dig around on the web a bit. Short of any other findings I'd do the Garmin again. If I need to adjust a BC I'll just tweak it to match the ballistics and have a more useful accurate number. Any radar unit capable of reliably gathering data for BC calculation will likely have a trailer hitch.

Thank you, looking at one for my son.

Athlon is/has released one that is supposed to compete with the Garmins. but I haven’t seen any reports about them

Been using my Shooting Chrony Beta for about 15 years now. It works just fine for me, and the manufacturer will repair/replace the unit for a reasonable price in case it catches a stray round. It is sensitive to ambient light and doesn't work indoors, which is not an issue for me.

Really liking the arex delta gen 2IMG_20250325_184847272.jpgIMG_20250325_185151336~2.jpg
It fits in several glock 19 Holsters
It's quite a bit slimmer and lighter than a glock,Ruger rxm and M&P compact.
IMG_20250325_184954631~3.jpg
I've been carrying it a few days
It's so much slimmer and lighter I don't even notice it.
It's a very crisp double action that about 6 pounds and operates like a regular striker fired.IMG_20250325_185136581.jpg
The non optics ready version is on sale for 250.00 free shipping now
They were around 400.00

MP5 clone porn.
2 stamper on left. The sbr stamp was approved in less than 24hrs. Maybe a new record?
Steel challenge competition SBR for PCCO class in middle. I made the handguard/optic mount out of aluminum tubing. Burnt bronze cerekote.
On right, nothing special. I may thread the muzzle for a brake or can.
I posted pic of the center gun on a HK site. It was not well received. They acted like it was blasphemous for an mp5 to look different than all the rest. They were quite upset. Its a tool.

I'm really digging the wood stock on the rifle. Is that an original HK94? I always thought that, since HK had to use a 16" barrel, they should have extended the receiver/forend out a few inches and gave it a G3 look.
The wood stock is from a CETME C. I really like the looks of wood furniture on it too. As with everything HK, wood furniture is overvalued. CETME furniture is a good value if you can still fund it. Agreed, a longer handguard of wood would be nicer but I would need to extend the cocking tube. Not worth the effort. I have a matching cetme wood handguard I want to cut down someday.

To be fair not all was negative. I must admit I was tempted to troll the commenters that didn't give any thought past how it looked. The mp5 roller lock is the gold standard in low-felt recoil. Why not take a cheap clone of something great and eek out a little more? And, improve the ergonomics.

They have a bunch of SAR pistols on clearance. Several have sold out already, but they still have quite a few. https://palmettostatearmory.com/daily-deals-new/sar-usa-gun-clearance.html

I ended up snagging one of these…kinda hard to beat the price for a poly frame CZ75 clone.
