So I’m porting a 550mk2. The base cut is limited by the flange under the transfer covers.

But the base gasket is quite thick.

I didn’t love the idea of a full delete, so I cut a can.

Here’s the thing: That gasket looks like an insulator. Am I going to have overheat issues? MK1 was plagued by that. I feel a lot better only taking 0.020” off the base but do I need that insulation from the case?

Isn't there enough material behind that flange to seal the transfers no matter how much you took off, just asking because I've only cut the base on a mk1? On my mk1 I cut the base and didn't use a gasket and so far I haven't had any over heating problems.

How much did you take off the base?

I looked at the picks of mine and I didn't take any good ones of that area, I know I took enough off to make a pop up. only pic I have of the base.

One of the saw porters could probable give you an idea of what can be removed. @huskihl @Mastermind @Stump Shot

It can be reasoned out with a gasket delete, a reasonable squish band cut can be had with minimal machining to the base and have it land in a good working spot that the saw likes. Just a cleanup/finish base cut ought to do to get your squish tolerance to .020".

Sorry, I can't remember and I didn't write it down.

For anyone doing mods I recommend getting some kind of note book so you can keep track of your build, otherwise like @Ronie just found out, knowledge learned will be lost for future builds and have to be done all over again from scratch.

This is excellent advice! Especially for people like myself with CRS disease!

I take .040” from the band and delete the gasket. No idea how much comes off the base. Never noticed it being an issue

Couldn’t agree more. If I lost this little book 4 years of hard won info would be gone.

Here’s a shot of the jug that shows how the transfer cover surface angles down to the base opening. After 0.070” base cut the base would be very thin there.

I took 0.052” off the last one and left the gasket. Hasn’t cratered yet, but the flange is a wafer now.

Do you delete the Gasket, Steve? Or just take it all off the base? Any overheat issues?

First thing I said is a gasket delete.
No heat issue has been reported as yet.

Approximately .005" + or - depending on jug and accuracy for a .020" ending squish.
