Ms 201 C started leaking fuel today through flippy cap. Never had a problem with them. Rubber O ring is very loose. Do I need a new O ring or a new cap. This saw is 10+ years old. Thank in advance for any help.

I had an oiler cap on a MS 460 and bought a couple of oil rings and a cap 3 yeas and still on the first oil ring. Oiler on a 101 pole saw had no warning cap just broke, Glad I wasn't working it overhead. bought 2 and 1 is in the spare parts shelf.

Most of the time a new o-ring will do the trick. But, not always.
Oe caps are only $10

The o-rings are never tight. Look at the outer part of the o-ring where it seals against the taper of the tank. If there is a flat spot on the o-ring, then that’s your problem. Sometimes you can get more time out of an o-ring by taking it off and flipping it around.

a slightly undersized diameter ring does work. I use the ones that come in the bulk kit I have :p

Hats off to the help. I have read so many threads on bad flippy caps and just wrote them off. No any more. They could make them the same size. so you could borrow the oil cap for the gas in a pinch. I did put a little bar oil on the O ring thinking that might help. Nope. At that point I had enough. Thought about switching O rings but my left hand glove was soaked it was cold and the sun was going down. Just sharpened the chain for tomorrow 2:07 am reckon I am done for the day. Thank you.

Don’t bank on the o-ring fixing them. Stihl’s flip caps aren’t designed well and have never lasted like they should. Usually it’s not the o-ring that’s the problem. I’ve replaced the OEM flip up caps on all my Stihl’s to non-flip up caps. Proline makes ones that you can find at Sawzilla…..problem solved.

I just switched over to the Proline non-flippy caps and like them but can't attest to longevity yet.

Stihl took two steps backwards with flippy caps.

The best caps are on the old saws that had the metal chains and hook that kept the cap with the saw. The first step backwards was going to all plastic and replacing the chains.
Yup. The oil tank cap on my 028S still has the original cap and chain. The flippy cap has resulted in more spilled bar oil for me than any of the threaded variety.

Look at it close when you close the flipper. If you see the cap body raise up on one side it is trashed and plastic is broken.

But you are missing the upside of flippy caps no need for a scrench. :meparto:

Perhaps someone could design a scrench with built in chip/paint brush for cleaning chips and crude out of the flippy caps. ;)

Look into the all black non-flippy flippy caps like David said. I believe proline is the only supplier now. I still have a few from when Definitive Dave was selling them. There is no un clocking that can happen with them. They are literally perfect

Or do as Husky did. A screw flippy cap.
The flippy provides the leverage to loosen a tight cap. As long as the gorilla is shark enough to not use it to tighten it as tight as possible
I really like those caps. Or like Echo so you can use the starter handle to loosen them.

DOUBLE "DITTO"
The chains don't Bunch up or leave the cap dangling in the way when you pour.
