Fire extinguishers!

We had a minor kitchen fire last night, fortunately we were able to get it put out. It did remind me to check all our fire extinguishers, but I'm embarrassed to say the kitchen one (which we used) is the only one I could find! So, I ordered some 10 pound Buckeye commercial units today, one each for kitchen, garage, basement, and barn. I'm going to get the current kitchen unit refilled and see if I can find the others to get them serviced. It would probably be a good idea to also get small ones for each vehicle and tractor.

My mom gave us a small pack to hang in a cupboard with a fire blanket in it. Definitely a good idea...I just have to remember where I put it...

For your equipment, I wouldn't recommend anything less than a 5lb. Look for 3a:40b:c or better. The little 2.5lb that so many carry are an absolute waste of space.

From the 1st picture, to the last picture is 6 minutes. I did not have any extinguisher, but there is no doubt that anything less than a 5lb would not have been effective.

Good firefighting! This is what I carry in my vehicle about $15 at hardware and box stores. No dry chemical mess. I used one to extinguish a car fire that had just started on the interstate a few years ago. They’re said to be more effective because just about everyone knows how to operate a spray can. Subject to freezing though.

Turns out Lowe's had two of the Buckeye 10 pounders in stock so I bought them, one for the kitchen and one for the garage. Still have two ordered online for the basement and the garage. I found my other two small fire extinguishers and you guessed it: they have never been serviced and don't work! I guess I have good fortune sometimes, in that the fire extinguisher I had on hand yesterday was the one that did work. A local firefighter services extinguishers so I'm taking the old ones to him on Friday.

Might suggest you start by looking in the cupboard. does not come with the fancy packaging and marketing but a welding blanket is basically the same thing twice the size and half the price.

I put out a fire in my JD 318 engine bay with 2 16 oz Buds many years ago after they went through me. If you don,t have a proper fire extinguisher please get one. A old army wool blanket can be a life saver too. An extinguisher in your auto big enough to break a car window should be law.

It's surprising how fast extinguishers run out. You can't have to big of an extinguisher or multiple extinguishers in a garage, shop, or around farm machinery or anything similar.
I have a habit of checking the gauges whenever I see one. They also recommend recharging or replacing every 6 - 12 years, they don't last forever. I write the date of purchase on mine with a sharpie, time flies. Easy to overlook or forget about until you have to use one.
Also, make sure you have the right type.

I've got a couple of those . Will charge up to 160 psi and hold a good bit of water.

Funny story.

Back in college days we were renting a duplex with a shared rear deck, had a privacy partition. Neighbors cats used to come on our side, and crap on the deck. We added some dish detergent to one of those extinguishers and had it by the back door ready for the cats. We waited until one cat was fully committed/in the squat/pooping, then we blew the cat and the crap right off the deck!

We’ve had a few equipment fires over the years. We lost a dozer a few years ago because we set the extinguisher out to flip the seat up to get to the batteries. It never made it back in the dozer. Fire started in the belly pan with bolt on side panels and it was a total loss. Now, EVERYTHING has at least a 5 pounder. The bigger tractors have a 10 pounder on them. With this new equipment running high exhaust temps, we make sure and check the exhaust systems for nests before starting if they’ve been sitting for any length of time.
