High Quality Chainsaw Bars Husqvarna Toys Hockfire Saws

finally decided to pull it out and measure it

and this proves

  • nothing

  • early 064 and 066 are the most badassest of them all

  • dave is daft

  • science is a lie

  • all the world's a stage and we are merely players, performers and portrayers

  • everyone should tear apart all of their MS660s and fill the crankcases with tranny fluid

  • not that kind of tranny fluid you weirdo

  • bacon

I wonder if the bearings had side plates to the inside and not letting the tranny fluid to get to the seals

Did all the bearings open ?

Hmmm I can check. You are talking about the plastic shield that comes on some Stihl bearings right?

the early 066 has a metal shield on the PTO side bearing, that probably invalidates the measurement on that model, all the others were shieldless
I also measured a farmertec crankcase with crank with the same methodology from the first 6 crankcases and got a volume of 88ml

You can always justify another saw.

the 044 i stripped on friday had metal shielded bearings. i thought maybe someone had changed the bearings and left them on. surprised the factory was leaving them on. with shields on the mix wont get in to lube and cool the bearings.

If you have measurements of bearings od, I'd and width you can many other good options shielded, dual seal, non shielded, hybrid ceramic, and the very costly full ceramic that can run lubed or dry

The shields are mainly dust covers they will get lubed. sealed bearings are shielded with a seal molded to the shield and those won't se much lube from mix even with the vacuum and case pressure.

I completely zoned out on this thread :(
Stihl Saw's MS660 (many thanks for the loan buddy) measured at 90ml and I measured 4 others since with all four at the same 90ml.
I am going to post a summary of this thread in the 064/066/MS660 info thread in the tech section.

IPL says "grooved ball bearing" 12 x 40 x 14( Fwheel) 6203

and the proprietary 17 x 40 x 14( clutch) one I removed from clutch side says NTN 2TS2-3A-SX0393 ( proprietary)

76ml - TIE early small bearing 066 and late 064
80ml - early 064
86ml - early big bearing 066
92ml - TIE both late big bearing 066

Am I correct in the statement that a short case w/poly flywheel 066 is 86ml and a long case w/poly flywheel 066/660 is 90-92ml?
