So I ruined a friend after letting him run a sausage stuffed jred and a minded husky. The modded ms390 I hooked him up with isn't enough anymore. Problem is he has some pretty fubared shoulders/rotators. Any suggestions on a saw thats forgiving to start?

I was going to build him a 372oe with a drilled out decomp. Probably just do a cut 268 dome piston and not much for bumping compression beyond that. Really want to lessen the chance of it snapping the rope back.

What are the expert's thoughts? He isn't going to buy firewood so I'm outta ideas beyond that and the above build.

Out of all my saw 20-30
The 3 372s with the 268 popup pistons
Are the easiest to start
It must be the lighter mass of the pistons
Comp is around 180-185
Very easy to start.
But the strongest 372s I have have are regular pistons in a ported saw.

79xx Dolkita Steve? They're like the most Husky 372 you can get without being a husky, but in bigger cc.

Problem with both my 79xx saws on a hot start they like full compression to start one pull. I have flooded them on a few occasions using the decomp on a hot start. :(

272s with decomps are easy to start with the tillotsons

I've been hard on my old bod and have a torn rotator right and a blown bicep left .My modded Stihl 038 mag is blowing 195 PSI and a D-handle tamed it right down .

I haven't much time on mine but it has a 372 HD Walbro so I'd expect it to perform just like my 372s, faultless.

I could be promoting the wrong product but I’ve got 65 year old worn out parts and my @Red97 ported Echo 590 is easy to start and cuts like a dream with a 20” bar.

I gots a saw on the shelf and a cyl from Joe in a box. Haven't had time to get er together yet.

A 46 year old local with some issues seems to have trouble starting a 590 with base gasket delete, so you never can tell how hard a saw is going to be to start for someone until they try it a few times. I'm not a fan of they way they feel when starting with the Decomp pressed (like a Stihl) soft but stiff.

You might put an elastostart on a 372. Is there a part number for an elastostart D handle?

I've converted most of my Stihl saws over to Husqvarna decomps for easier starting.
The 365/372 are some of the easiest saws to start in the collection I have, but I don't have any shoulder or arm injuries that would make it difficult.

A lot can be said for a decomp .When I first got the avatar saw ,a classic old redwood slayer Homelite 2100S the decomp was inoperable .It was a two handled start then .About like rope starting a Harley .After I delved into the problem and got it working it's an easy start for a large displacement saw .

I have or had 2252, 357, 6100, 2166, 266xp, 395…

Hands Down, the MMWS is the snottiest, snappiest, fastest, most powerful with easiest starting. I’m sorry I can remember his name, but remember the guy who had his little girl starting his? Yeah…you don’t even have to pull it fast…pulls 24” in dry hard eucalyptus or oak.

more vids of it on my channel.

It seems to me the hard thing for starting saws for people that are old or have physical issues is having to pull fast. You don’t have to with the dolly. Also, obviously, you don’t want to pull it more than a couple times, and I never do. Primer bulb and it’s one or two pulls…and a lot of times it will stay running with the choke on long enough to open the choke, no pop and second pull.

…and no decomp to remember or fool with.

I forgot about the 6100.

Great choice.

Hot dang....... I think that will be the winner. Much appreciated for that suggestion.

Now to try and see what one will set him back. And if he wants to keep it stock or have it ported off the bat.

It's been said chainsaws are like women. They're all sisters but they aren't identical twins .They have different personalities . You can tinker, tweet , make love to them ,kick them but to no avail. Case in point my Husqvarna 2100 CD ,High compression bull headed SOB but lots of power .Large Tillotson HS carb ,floods easily .Cold start, one tug with the choke then off .It will light off in about three usually .Choke too many times and it's flooded .Warm start ,one or two no choke .
Two Partner P-100 models .One choke until it pops then get off of it .Second one ,choke a few times then set the throttle lock putt putt putt . I have no idea why but I know how to start them and that's all that matters
