Hi,
today i recieved ms180 crankshaft that was advertised as perfectly good crankshaft, BUT as i checked for a main needle bearing, it had some slight up-down play - in my understanding any up-down play is a trasher.
Seller claims that he sold hundreds of parts and that crankshaft can have some up-down clearance...
luckily he doesnt hesitate too much to give me a refund.

What do you everyone say?

A modern chainsaw crankshaft should have zero detectable up-and-down movement in the rod, meaning you shouldn't feel any up and down movement when
checking one in your hands. Side-to-side deflection of the rod should be fairly minimal as well. The rod should move easily from one side of the
caged bearing to the other without any snags or a rough feeling.

It's hard to describe what a good condition crank "feels" like in hand, but once you've handled a bad one, you can recognize another right away.

What confused me a tiny bit was, both cranks have identical amount of up-down play - what are the odds?
On Every crankshaft that i have ever considered as a good crank i could never feel literally any up-down play AT ALL, but on this one you can easily feel some play. (0.1mm) or so.
My main question should have been : are there any "special" cranks with clearances for whatever reason. - so the answer would be NO.

Thanks

Guy is still convicted that small saws "must" have some up-down play.
Anyone has/had a ms170/180 to confirm that they dont?

180, 018C no play. 017s that got pistons, no play.
Giant old saws have tiny tiny bit of play maybe 0.002 dry.
Oil them and it's gone most times. Small cranks, no way no play. JJ gave it to you straight and to the point.

Thanks for checking it.
So in the end im right right?
I always knew that up-down is a no-no, but when someone "who has more experience" persistently assures you otherwise, you start to question yourself.
Thanks again for taking your time, both of you.

EDIT: I never questioned JJ's experience and knowledge, but things are bit different overhere, everyone knows everything and everyone else is wrong, so telling "someone told me so" and "someone checked and you're wrong" makes a big difference.

EDIT2: Guy gave me refund, and i offered to send crankshaft back, what he refused.... wonder why.

Check as many places as you can when questioning stuff that is vidal.

If the old doc or the new doc says "we can cut that out and you will be fine"
Bet your getting a second and third opinion, maybe more :)

No one was questioning anything JJ says.
