Craftsman 1.8 10 inch chainsaw

Can anyone tell me what the filter type affair is behind the metal plate on the oil resivoir is for? There was a hose on the back that broke off and was laying in the resivoir. Not sure where the hose should be connected but the chain didn't seem to be getting oil. The saw has to be close to 50 years old but runs good. Any help would be appreciated.

Here’s my JD 30 which is the same saw, an Echo 302. You can see the oiler line is attached to a somewhat hard to see & reach barb. I’m not sure what is in your pic but this is the correct line & filter. Both are available on ereplacementparts. I just went through this one to get it oiling again so I can help you with what I just learned.
