On most of my saws I just plug the decomp because I don't want any chance with it leaking and I can feel the raw compression lol. The pioneers p series seem to all have this over complicated auto decomp system. I want to plug it especially since its a 40+ year old decomp. Only issue, I've heard it can completely destroy the recoil because there's a linkage from the recoil to decomp. So my question is, is that true? What about removing the linkage as well? I think the linkage actually helps pull the starter claw back down, so don't think that would work, or maybe it will? Would like to hear your guys thoughts and if its possible. Thanks!

I do not believe there is a “linkage” at least a physical/mechanical one. Have you taken the saw apart enough to find a linkage. If so post a pic of it. If your reading “ linkage” in a description it maybe referring to a “ this” is related to “that” type linkage …AKA a decomp valve helps ease the impact of starting on the saw’s recoils system.

The only thing I’m assuming it does is lower the compression ( like any other decompression valve ) witch also prevents breaking the pull cord or recoil assembly. Many of the older saws ran impressively high compression right out of the box and had heavier rotating internals. Back then pull cords were not high strength synthetic fiber blends that were super heat, fuel and abrasion resistant, so they broke easier. The catch paws and other bits in the pull starter were also not like newer tuffer components. IMO if there is some weird fiddly bit that is attach to the decomp vale, whether a wire or tube it’s a gimmick.

Easiest easy to find out is pull it and plug it. If she starts and runs fine ur done. Just maybe restring with new cord and be mindful of how hard you are on the recoil assembly.
