I could not agree more. As I split, the chickens wait like trained hawks. If a slab of bark falls off, they pounce on it, not only for ants, but also grub worms and anything else that wiggles. They even clean up the stacks if they see any insect within reach. Rather amazing in my book.
For some reason freshly cut hickory draws ants .What I usually do is wet the whole stack down with Sevin dust from a water applicator .It seems to work .
I still love Lefty's chickens. There will be four or five hanging around waiting for lunch. Every time we work around the wood pile they come a running.
