Opened up a birch tree that got taken down a month ago. Had a few pockets of rot (imagine that) but in their location would be a great spot for a colored epoxy fill. Some quilting going on throughout the grain also. A lot of character in these and love how they turned out.55FDD11A-743D-4C7A-BFED-9EFA7EBDDEBF.jpeg4021AA6F-0977-4D57-B599-9D96C071A31A.jpeg 182F2CF1-B76D-4381-BA1B-C17B59139C09.jpeg30D9F939-A849-4B90-A0AD-5EDD8A74C56F.jpegB717E540-1CF4-4A4A-800D-C47D965FE7FC.jpeg

I sell some slabs as a side gig, these are pretty unique and rare for birch and I may hang on to most of them. They would make a good bar top or smaller table of some type.

Pretty rare for white birch that size to be solid where I live here. Nice slabs!

That is a beautiful set of slabs you have. For finishing I’m a fan of letting the natural color of the wood speak for itself, and try to get it almost to the point of the first time you make a cut and open the log up. I really like Rubio Monocoat in their natural finish. It’s a flooring finisher and extremely durable. It bonds with the surface of the wood and doesn’t soak in, a little goes a long way. I left a frozen water bottle on a test piece and let it sit for almost 2 days with the moisture on it, in the right light you can see a faint ring/stain. Otherwise you would never know it’s there. For a natural look on the wood it’s hard to beat, supposed to blend well if maintenance repairs are needed as well.
