Im no pro but 7/32 is the filen I use for 3/8 chain. I say keep going with the freehand fileing and you will get on to it. Make sure you have a good sharp file. Dont worry about counting strokes and take many lite stroke rather then a few hard aggressive strokes. Keep the gullet clean out.Thank you guys! I’m using a 7/32 file for this saw, isn’t that the correct one? Now that you mention it I think I do push back too hard, and I’m getting that handy husky roller guide!
When i do my rakers i use the guage, then i will take a couple extra half strokes to drop it just below the guage. I find it better for bucking firewood and you can also go a couple filings with out touching rakers usually.
