my buddies 661 occasionally doesn't want to start when hot. ran a tank threw it the other day hot in the 90s outside and bucking up a dead red oak with hard dry wood so saw was getting a decent workout shut it off refueled and it didn't want to restart had to pull on it a bunch
I will check to see what coil is on it
anyone else have any issues like this with theres?

I don't have one of them, but on hot days my M-Tronic 362 will sometimes stall, and the only way to start it is to put it in "run" (not start) position and pin the throttle. It does not happen often, but very annoying when it does happen. FYI, my saw is ported and has a timing advance, which may throw the factory computer a little off.

If he is under warranty and the saw is stock, I would bring it back to the dealer.

I know from other threads that Shihl has an updated boot and coil for the 661s (depending on mfg date).

My opinion is I would get the info from this site and not count on the dealer knowing about it. I talk with a few dealers, and what I learn on this site is often news to them.

My guess is there is nothing 'wrong' with the saw. Your weather is hot atm, it was run hard switched off and had trouble restarting as the carb got soaked with heat. Not an unusual problem for 2T's. The carb will stay cold under operation but switched off will absorb heat fast.

The only time I've had this happen to any of my 661's was after I turned the saw immediately off after making a nice size cut. I have let the saw run for 10-15 seconds after such a cut before shutting down...and have not had it happen since.

Pull your rewind starter off and see what ecm it had in it. If it's a D module ask politely for it to be replaced under warranty

I agree with this totally, and always try to let the 362 idle a few before shut down, but it is when the saw stalls on me in very hot weather that I have the problem. The idle time seems to reset the M-Tronic or something.

I like to let the saws idle for a bit after cutting before shutting down but not sure how long it idled before being shutoff on that particular time. I will see about what coil and ecu is on it and pay close attention to shutdowns the saw otherwise runs great for being stock. I have talked to him about getting it masterminded he wants to wait till after warranty especially after the couple times its started hard

How long since plug changed; an old plug can require higher voltage; how fresh the fuel? Try known fresh, water-free, ethanol-free fuel and see if it helps?

I thought I already posted, buttt...... Try a Fresh spark plug and Known fresh fuel mix w/ no ethanol and no water? Fuel is 90% of start problems, and old plugs require higher voltage

Probably just winter blend fuel on a hot day.

I think it is easier just to leave it in Run position and peg the trigger before pulling the recoil.

Hate to dredge up an old thread, but our new 661 did this Monday. Had a 48" red oak fall across the road and had to get it moved. I cut the top and root ball off to have the dozer move it, but he still couldn't. I tried to start the saw to cut it in the middle and saw didn't want to start. Had to hold it WFO and it finally started. I bet I cranked 30 times before I did that. It was purchased in March and has the updated coil and such. I did accidentally shut it off without idling because I hit the stupid new switch with my booger hook.

I'll bet it was hot out. That WFO trick is good to know with any M Tronic saw. Glad it worked.
