I assumed you have to cut the groove deeper so the chain won't bottom up?

There is another possibility. This sawyer likely snapped the rail by trying to use it to pry something, or he tried to straighten it in a vise. I snapped a bastard file in half once upon a time while doing that.

On either case, this bar was not mounted on the saw when broken.
