I see Stens sells AM cylinder kits. How is the quality on these things?

I've never used one myself, but my local dealer uses them on their used saws they sell. The one I've actually held in my hand the quality looked like less that that of farmertech. Lots of pitting and incomplete fill. @Mattyo got an ms200t from me that I bought from the same dealer and had a stens kit on it. I made the mistake of trusting that they did a good job. The squish was ridiculously large and they missed a leaky seal.

I bought a slug and jug for my MS290, looked plenty fine to me...I ended up going with a complete big bore engine from Bailey's but I'm gonna put the original engine back together with the Stens components...I will do so with confidence.

Even with the squish tightened up on the 200t kit the comp wasn't as good as oem. Looked like a nice cylinder and piston visually.

@idiotwithasaw

My buddy Used the 200t with the steNS cylinder and a Husky 350 to do this job

Stens sources their cylinders and pistons from a number of different manufacturers. Some of their stuff is really good, like the kits they get from Tecomec, but some of the stuff is the same old white box garbage that's all over Ebay.

They sent me a couple sets to try out a few years back(ts-420 and a 390 IIRC), i returned them.... they werent worth using but in the past i know they have used the tecomec cylinders which are decent quality.

Stens stuff is ridiculously overpriced junk in my area. Like JJ said, it's the same cheap Chinese stuff you can buy on the Bay. The top end kits are between $150-200 here. You can go Oem cheaper.
Eight bucks for a walbro style fuel filter you can buy for a buck or less. 25 bucks for a carb kit.

I gave up on it all long ago

I use stens for alot of mower parts. I have used a c&p set from them and it still runs. It was on a ts 400 for a guy. I was making a huge order and had a real nice discount on the kit. I didn't know what I know now but I checked it over good and it's been in service for about 4 years. Several blades, recoils and 2 carb kits later. I'd look for other options for cylinders now but they work and served a purpose at the tine.

They generally are pretty good, not the worst by far. I know another dealer that junks things all the time because they need a carb kit. I actually like etown small engine. They just get swamped and only have two 2 strokes mechanics, they get covered up and get rushed and things get missed. I've bought several used peices of equipment from them that all run well.

here is my rotary corporation and i wouldn't pay what they ask for this kits even at cost because i can get better kits elsewhere.
the cost price is written in ink now on other parts the prices are reasonable.

I'm glad u got it running. I was seriously embarrassed about it. The "low" compression is understandable considering it was an am kit and they used a base gasket. But it should never have left their bench with a bad seal. That's just unacceptable.
